Back in the early days of the Covid shutdown, I received an unexpected text from my friend Sam of Hostess Haven. She told me I had just won the California Wedding Day Best Dressed Bride of 2020! I had no idea I was even nominated, so it came as a double surprise!
My Colorful Wedding Dress
Truth be told, as much as I adore white wedding dresses, I’ve never been much of a “white dress” kind of person. I love them on my brides, but it wouldn’t feel like “me” if I wore one. I never even tried on a traditional wedding dress until well after I got married and purchased The White Flower.
I always knew I would wear either black or something colorful for my wedding. Bonus if it happened to be Marchesa – one of my favorite designers for ready to wear and bridal. I actually went to a Marchesa Couture ready to wear trunk show in San Diego a year before my wedding, but they only had size 0 in standard runway length…meaning I could barely fit in them and was drowning in the length.
For months, I put off my search, while keeping an eye on Marchesa gowns gracing eBay and other auction sites. I had even bookmarked my actual Marchesa colorful wedding dress, but it was sold out and listed at a rate I would never spend on a dress. Eventually, I saw that it was listed on Saks.com at a very discounted price…but still sold out. I took a chance by calling to see if they had any left…they did! One left in the entire country in Houston at Saks, although 2 sizes too large for me (thank you to the amazing alterations I was able to do!). I ordered it immediately, tried it on in my office, and had a very decisive “say yes” moment by myself.
You Do You
I was initially anxious that people would judge me negatively for choosing a nontraditional wedding dress, but I am SO glad I put that anxiety aside and honored my first instinct to don a colorful wedding dress. I felt 100% myself on the wedding day and I guess it paid off by being honored as an Editor’s Pick for Best Dressed Bride of 2020 by California Wedding Day.
